Starbucks (Starbucks.co.uk)

Of course the starbucks site belongs to the American coffee shop chain of the same name, which has metastasized to every corner of the globe. starbucks is a classic example of what happens when franchising runs amok: this same pattern of shop and product is repeated in an enormous number of iterations on every street corner until one is heartily sick of the sight of the too-familiar sign. And starbucks' corporate presence is legion, because it has closed more stores than many chains ever manage to open. In one recent year, starbucks closed almost one thousand stores and eliminated over eighteen thousand jobs. That leaves the starbucks corporation with only seventeen thousand coffee shops in fifty-five nations from which to sell their diverse lines of branded products, like its coffees and ice cream (which are also sold in grocery stores). Each starbucks store has a sideline in small coffee-related items such as small grinders for whole beans, cups and mugs, Ethos bottled water (in marketing which starbucks gets to overcharge for water while earning "corporate responsibility" points), and small delicious edibles like organic fair trade chocolate bars, which are sometimes almost as good as Cadbury's classics. There is no other small coffee shop that has achieved anything similar to this phenomenal expansion by starbucks, and the reasons behind starbucks' success are hard to pin down. The original starbucks storefront was opened in 1971 by three members of the intelligentsia, who wished to sell high-end coffees and brewing equipment. That triumvirate hired a marketing director who wanted to sell the finished coffee product and bought out the founders in order to pursue that business plan. But the counterculture image and focus on ingredients of top quality remained with the company, and starbucks has been trading on those characteristics ever since while making shrewdly unscrupulous leaps up the business ladder.

It's only fair to note the starbucks claim to use the best beans is legitimate, and the chain is very particular about how its beverage selections are brewed and mixed. starbucks has also made several forays into the food line with an aborted restaurant venture and a line of breakfast sandwiches targeted at McDonalds' customers.
