The monsoon site sells clothing, and promises to do that in an unusually entertaining manner, because the photograph on its home page shows an extremely peculiar get-up that meant to be, by the look of it, a flirty twist on dressier women's wear. A haughty model is daring the viewer to laugh at her wide-brimmed red hat with a violet band, her red and spotty blouse with a flowing bow, and her fringed or tasseled sweater (all of which look even more bizarre in combination with a perfectly unexceptional pair of tweedy pants). Any one of those items worn alone would pass muster, perhaps, but why monsoon chose to pile them onto the same model is beyond comprehension. But the photograph is a very useful object lesson on what not to do with monsoon separates, and that is wear them together. One doesn't suppose that is what monsoon meant to say, of course, but that is clearly what's conveyed. So in the yellow light of that caution, let us review monsoon's knitwear page, for that is what category the fringed, tasseled or even wooly-tailed sweater falls into. Predictably, the knitwear is obtrusive, featuring masses of knitting in the dresses (for example, the Lysander Colourblock Dress with its broad contrasting bands, or the Fusion Sagitta Dress, which has the same problem in its bodice, or the Fusion Harlequin Sequin Knitted Dress, over which a merciful Providence shall draw a veil).

Anyone who is looking for a Dakota Zig Zag Tunic (with very prominent zigs and zags) may find it at monsoon for only forty-five pounds, but there are a number of simple cardigans to be found also, and some of those (the white Fusion Nebula Speckled Cable Knit, the curry-gold Miranda, and even the Megan Crisscross Coatigan) are not half bad, because of their relative lack of fussy color or detail. monsoon as a retail entity has been around since its 1972 origin on the Portobello Road, when all this shaggy knitting was more in fashion, thus less eye-catching. There are now over four hundred monsoon storefronts, and the company has moved from its Paddington headquarters to a new building located in Notting Dale Village.
