Since its inception in the nineteen fifties, McDonald’s corporation has been associated with two recognizable marketing icons. The giant letter M that stands in front of most Macdonald’s franchises is known as the golden arches. The shape of the lighted sign signifies the name of the company, but the moniker ‘golden arches’ has been given to the prominent feature. The color of the icon is actually yellow, rather than gold. It is fortunate for the company that the ‘golden arches’ designation has been proliferated instead of ‘yellow arches’. The color yellow does nothing to elevate the concept of a hamburger. To call the arches golden associates the franchise with a precious metal. Is the value of a hamburger the same as a piece of gold? Probably not, but the association serves to entice consumers. And that is the name of the game.
The other icon associated with the fast food chain is even more curious. The mascot and face of the company is a clown named Ronald. Ronald McDonald exhibits many of the characteristics of an everyday clown, but his focus is undeniably linked to selling burgers for the chain. Ronald is clad in a puffy yellow and red jumpsuit with exaggerated trousers ala M.C. Hammer. His hair is perhaps his most prominent feature. Giant curly locks of orange hair create an Anglo-afro that blends seamlessly with the rest of his outfit. Orange suspenders and color-matched clown shoes are hard to miss despite the frizzy orange distraction atop Ronald’s head. During the growth of the Macdonald’s brand, marketers astutely created other mythical creatures to interact with Ronald. The Grimace is a head-bobbing slurpy purple monster with an eager to please attitude. The Grimace’s pear-shaped carcass is the ideal repository for Ronald’s unique brand of spunk. The two engage in oral antics that immediately becomes the stuff of local lore. Grimace advocates Coca-Cola as a therapeutic elixir after a job well done.
The Hamburglar is a masked villain-type character that plays opposite Ronald in a contrived hamburger whodunit. Always sneaking about in the shadows, the Hamburglar is quick to snatch an unguarded burger from a complacent diner.
