The focusdiy.co.uk site is not at all a normal retail site, but rather a Going Out of Business Sale sign rendered in website terms. And in fact the entire group of Focus DIY, Do It All and Payless DIY companies is currently in administration, which is one of the phases of a UK bankruptcy. So all the traditional hard sell tactics employed by focusdiy are strictly true: the company is going out of business forever, items are up to 70 percent off, and time is indeed running out to profit by focusdiy's losses. At this point it would usually be appropriate to add, "It's high time someone did, because focusdiy has been a troubled company for a long time." That would not be the case when speaking of focusdiy: news about this company was positive until its collapse, to a degree almost never seen in this era of instant and widespread availability of financial minutiae. True, the company started posting operating losses in 2007, but if all the companies which could say the same went under tomorrow, the retail landscape would be significantly denuded. The point in retail is to keep product flowing in and out while keeping creditors reasonably pacified, and in its last year of operation-- which is now, 2011-- focusdiy was still the fourth largest do it yourself store in the UK, with 178 storefronts and 3000 employees.
News of the bankruptcy really did burst upon the retail scene, in the same manner as hold-up men burst in upon a dinner party: the invasion was sudden and most unwelcome. No other retailer could absorb the whole of focusdiy, so after selling only 55 stores the company was forced to close out the remainder, and those stranded goods are what the focusdiy site offers, in 64 point type. This merchandise is unquestionably what living focusdiy once offered, it most assuredly is being sold by someone who must get rid of it, and it provides unparalleled bargains for customers who act quickly. The after-the-fact story is that focusdiy has been for sale since fall of 2010, but had too much debt to make it an attractive acquisition in an era of tight money. That's a pity, as it was evidently a going concern.
