Fitness First (Fitnessfirst.co.uk)
The fitnessfirst site epitomizes the streamlined corporate approach to operating and marketing a business. It's not possible to make a website any easier to use than this one, and people who spend a lot of time on the go are the obvious focus of the product's design. The home page offers a deeply discounted trial membership (starting at thirty-three pounds for six weeks), although it is impossible to determine from the subsequent web pages exactly how the three classes of membership (Blue, Platinum and Black Label) differ from each other, except in price. Everything the customer buys from fitnessfirst, namely access to gym facilities and exercise training, is similarly compartmentalized: one can pay the minimum or fork over increasing stacks of money for different memberships.. The fitnessfirst site hedges considerably in telling you exactly what you'll pay, never mind what you'll receive for the money. There's a long chain of links eventually leading the shopper to information about what the membership options are, and certainly those options are many, leading to great flexibility in what one can buy. One can gain access to one gym or choose to pay for more (with several tiers of "Multi-club" options available), fitnessfirst offers full or off-peak hour access, and the customer can choose the length of the membership. That's a very innovative approach to pricing, although of course one would need to use a spreadsheet program to calculate a meaningful display-- and, no doubt not by accident, fitnessfirst omits any attempt to provide the shopper with that comparison calculator.
In a smaller and younger company, that caginess when talking price would be a red flag suggesting fitnessfirst is heading off anticipated customer dissatisfaction at the pass, or postponing it until the customer's funds are securely in hand. What defuses that suspicion is the sheer size of the fitnessfirst operation: fitnessfirst reports 540+ gyms scattered throughout the world, with a particularly strong presence in America and the UK, and a recent movement into Asia. But there's a late-breaking (October 6, 2011) update to that information about the geography of fitnessfirst's corporate presence: BC Partners of London, which bought fitnessfirst in 2005, is selling off its Asia and Australia units.
