This URL redirects to jeans-direct.com, which sells straightforward Levis, Lee and Wrangler brand jeans. The site is therefore a compendium of the major traditional players in the American denim clothing market, and that's the territory staked out by fast-jeans: shipping US jeans to the UK and Europe. There's nothing complicated about that idea, and indeed it works very well. Certainly the Levis, Lee and Wrangler sites provide exactly the same service, but naturally one can't buy directly from those three companies on a single site. The fast-jeans brands themselves are iconic, particularly Levis, which has romanticized its history as follows: Levi Strauss, who had just arrived in New York from Germany, traveled to California to set up a dry goods store. Strauss brought with him heavy, utilitarian canvas, which he made into overalls upon request. When customers complained the fabric was uncomfortably rough, Strauss began to use a French cloth known as "serge de Nimes," which was Anglicized into our word "denim." The Levis company dates the genesis of the product to 1853, and describes the fabric substituted as "twilled cotton cloth." Apparently that description also fits another type of French fabric known as "jean fustian," sometimes given as "bleu de Gênes," and supposedly that explains the transition to the now universal "jeans" as a word for a type of denim pants.

The Lee jeans found on fast-jeans have a much simpler and more plausible background, originating in Salina, Kansas. Henry David Lee began to manufacture jeans in 1889, but with an etymological difference: Lee refers to the pants as "dungarees," which is a word most people still understand but never use. It's an interesting noun that currently has no singular form, although originally it did. "Dungaree" is a type of cloth originally produced in India, defined as "coarse calico," and a pair of pants made from that cloth was therefore called "dungarees." What's interesting about Lee's use of the word is this: there's no evidence that Lee ever used anything other than standard denim to make his dungarees, but yet the Indian name survives today in the Lee brand description.
